Notes: This recently discovered session, referred to by Porter 1998, p. 372, who considers the above date the probable one for this recording.

The first three tracks on the CD-R of this recording had all but no sound on the right channel, most of the way through. Using computer soft this was boosted whereupon substantially more information became apparent in that track, equal that of the left. The first 0:35, begins with the show’s theme tune, and voice over of the presenter, Alan Grant, who then states that it is time to return to Jimmy Garrison. The theme is faded out after 0:14, when Jimmy Garrison’s bass solo can be heard fading in the background, with the voiceover continuing to introduce the broadcast and the musicians. The bass solo continues until 1:51, at very low volume, indeed dropping out almost completely around 1:49 on the left channel, when the volume suddenly increases and the solo becomes, bass drum duet. This duet continues until 2:13, when Coltrane joins in. However, when the level for both tracks, for the first 1:51 were boosted it is apparent that the bass solo comes in after 0:04. The piece ends at 14:30 with the announcement of John Coltrane, when the track ends at 14:32. There is a new track for the next announcements, similarly the right channel has only the barest of information, boosting of that brings it back. The announcer states:

“I, I, I want my listeners to know, because I think that it is important, because we went on the air at 11:15 and this tune started at twenty minutes before eleven, and it is fifteen minutes before we had a station break, it is WABC FM at 99.5 on your dial, and this is Alan Grant presenting Portraits in Jazz. John Coltrane will be appear here up until.. through April the 4th… How about a big hand for John Coltrane, John Coltrane (shortly after which there is a brief sound of some sax noodling)….”

The first version of Afro Blue fades out at 10:16.

From item 3, there is more information apparent in the right channel, though it remains weaker than the left.

There is the briefest fraction of an announcement as item 4 as faded out.

For that album (assembled in 1972) Alice Coltrane over-dubbed herself on harp, and tamboura, Joan Chapman, tamboura; Oran Coltrane bells; and a string orchestra. On the later release Feelin’ Good, Impulse! IZ9345-2, the original quartet version of the track was released. Note that Coltrane over-dubbed himself on soprano saxophone on this title (at the original session).”

Notes: Unfortunately or not, depending on your perspective on this and aesthetic, this is the last studio recording of the quartet. David Wild, in his internet discography, writes: “This version of Joy is the only title extant from what was a private Coltrane session. It was initially released on the Infinity album, in edited format with strings, harp, vibes and an additional bassist (Charlie Haden) over-dubbed, at a length of 8:01. On Impulse IZ9345-2 and equivalents the title has been restored to its original format and length.”

The sleeve for IMPD-199, provides the following information Coltrane for all of his instruments, comes through the left channel; Sanders the same on the right channel; and Jones and Ali on right and left channels, respectively.

These are the last recordings of McCoy Tyner with John Coltrane. McCoy Tyner left the group at the end of 1965, complaining that he could no longer hear himself play due to the double drummer situation. He was soon followed by Elvin Jones, who advanced the same reason for leaving, which puts to death the contestation of some that McCoy left because he was insufficiently avant-garde to follow the direction Coltrane was taking.

3. Peace On Earth (9:03)

4. Leo (10:08)

Notes: In 1972 Alice Coltrane over-dubbed herself on vibraphone and organ, and a string section on all, substituted bass parts by Charlie Haden for those by Jimmy Garrison on items 3 & 4; now item 3 exists in two versions the original 1966 recording and the 1972 over-dubbed version. Information for this session from David Wild’s Coltrane Discography, (Spring 1979).
